Frequently asked questions

What is SortBrain?

SortBrain is a Mac app that helps you organize, search and clean up large photo and video collections. It finds duplicates, groups your library into events and trips, recognizes faces so you can name them, and lets you search in plain language.

Is SortBrain free?

Yes. SortBrain is free to download and use. If it saves you time, you can support its development with a donation.

Does SortBrain upload my photos?

No. All analysis, including face grouping and search, runs on your Mac. SortBrain has no account, no cloud and no tracking.

Does it change or delete my original files?

No. SortBrain only reads your originals. When you organize, it creates copies in a new folder after showing you a plan, and every operation is logged and can be undone.

Which Macs are supported?

SortBrain requires macOS 13 Ventura or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).

Which drives and file types work?

Folders and external drives formatted as APFS, HFS+, exFAT and FAT32 work fully. NTFS drives are read-only on macOS, so scanning and finding duplicates work, but organizing files onto them does not. SortBrain handles common photo formats such as JPEG, HEIC and RAW, and common video formats.

In which languages can I search?

You can search in English and Dutch. The interface is available in both languages too.

How can I support SortBrain?

You can donate through PayPal from the donation button on this site. Sharing the app with friends helps as well.
